CHAPTER 8

LUKE

ANGEL’S LONG, DARK lashes fluttered as she nestled against me. There was torture and then there was sweet torture. Sleep still eluded me, which was torture, but being wide awake to watch every scrunch of her tiny nose and hear every soft, drowsy mewl roll from her luscious lips had been sweet torture. I wanted badly to touch her again. Hell, who was I kidding? I wanted badly to fuck her, to take her into my arms, strip her naked and fuck her until she cried out my name. If only I could remember my damn name.

There were sporadic, frustrating moments when I wanted to slam my head against a wall or table to see if I could knock it back into reality. Angel’s mention of wire in my ear had jarred something inside as if someone had shoved a Taser into my gut and fired it. But as strong as my reaction had been, I still couldn’t figure out why.

Gunshots shattered the silence. I sat up so quickly, I had to grab hold of Angel before she rolled off onto the floor.

She sat up wide-eyed and dazed as she glanced around the cabin. Then she turned back to me. “How long was I asleep?”

There was another gunshot and I tensed up again. The sound of it produced the same sickening feeling in my gut as the mention of wire. I shook my head to get the ringing out of my ears.

She smiled. “It’s just Gunner doing target practice. He fancies himself quite the marksman. Unfortunately, he is delusional. He’s always been better with his fists than a gun.” She lowered her feet to the floor and zipped up her jeans. Another gunshot was followed by loud music blaring out over the courtyard. The speakers must have been positioned all around the entire compound because it was as loud as being in the front row of a concert, a Beatles concert. “And welcome to the mad world I call home sweet home. My grandfather is obviously testing the speakers for his party. It’s a good thing our only neighbors are foxes and owls. There won’t be a critter or bird for miles after the party.”

“Helter Skelter?”

“Yep, he’s been going through his Beatles phase again, and he loves this album. Sometimes living with my grandfather is like living in a time warp.” She stopped and stared down at her lap for a second. “He’s been a little crazy lately, and it kind of freaks me out. I’ve always figured my mom’s mental health problems had been inherited. Sometimes I catch him with that sort of faraway look in his eye like she used to get.”

“But don’t you think he would have shown it a long time ago, when he was younger like her?”

“I suppose but then he’s always been pretty eccentric, and he’s not exactly the type of person you can say ‘wow, that’s just crazy’ to. People are scared of him, so nobody questions anything he does.” Her shoulders tightened.
